Jamie Foxx made an emotional return to the stage one year after experiencing a terrifying health scare.
“God is good … As I post these pictures, my heart and my soul is filled with nothing but pure joy,” 56, captioned behind-the-scenes pics from the filming of his upcoming stand-up special, One More Chance: An Evening with Jamie Foxx, via Instagram on Monday, October 14. “On October 3 fourth and fifth I had an opportunity to tell my side of the story and there was no better place than Atlanta, Georgia.”
The actor thanked his Atlanta audience, writing, “I haven’t been on stage in 18 years but I needed the stage and I needed an audience that was made up of nothing but pure love and that’s what you were.”
Foxx went on to note that while his special is a stand-up show, it’s also “an artistic explanation of something that went terribly wrong but thanks to the great people in Atlanta especially Piedmont Hospital you enabled me to come back and be on stage and do what I love to do the most.”
Among the Instagram slideshow’s snaps, Foxx was photographed seemingly wiping away tears, hugging audience members and performing a song on a piano.
In the special, which will later stream on Netflix, Foxx will “share his journey through a serious health scare, filled with humor, heart, and inspiration,” per a September 2 post on the actor’s Instagram page. “Experience Jamie Foxx like never before in this intimate and engaging performance, as he opens up about his struggles, triumphs, and everything in between. Get ready for a night of laughter, reflection, and genuine connection.”
Jamie announced the special was in the works back in March, nearly one year after his daughter Corinne revealed that her dad had suffered a “medical complication.” Jamie’s health scare occurred during the production of his and Cameron Diaz’s upcoming Netflix movie, Back In Action. He was released from the hospital in May 2023. (Jamie shares Corinne, 30, with Connie Kline and daughter Anelise, 16, with Kristin Grannis.)
Jamie has yet to publicly reveal the exact cause of his health concern but revealed during his first public appearance in December 2023 that he “couldn’t actually walk” for some time after the incident.
In July, Foxx told a group of fans in Phoenix that he was “gone for 20 days” after experiencing a “bad headache” in April 2023. “I don’t remember anything,” he said in social media footage.
“I won’t say it on camera. Yeah. I won’t say it on camera. But it was …” he added before shrugging his shoulders.
Jamie was back on his feet to walk Corinne down the aisle during her September wedding to Joe Hooten. “It was incredibly special, considering his health scare last year. I walked down [the aisle] to a strings version of ‘Georgia on My Mind’ by Ray Charles,” Corinne told Vogue in an interview published on October 3. “My dad won his Oscar for playing [Charles in Ray] in 2005. At 10 years old, I was his plus one and got to share that special moment with him. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when we came down the aisle.”
Jamie hosted his daughter’s big day at his Thousand Oaks, California, home. “It was never a question. We always knew we’d get married in my dad’s backyard,” Corinne said of her ceremony. “He has the most gorgeous property. It already looks like a wedding venue. We couldn’t think of anywhere more special than a home wedding. It just felt right.”
