Manchester United have conceded 10 goals in the last four games including two direct from corners with set-pieces proving to be their Achilles heel.
Ruben Amorim is far from impressed with the performances of both his goalkeepers with backup keeper Altay Bayindir conceding four against Tottenham Hotspur including the first goal straight from a corner.
United’s No 1 Andre Onana repeated the feat against Wolves on Thursday and after a bright start to the campaign, has again made a few high-profile errors recently.
The Portuguese head coach wants a revamp of the goalkeeping department with the club keeping their eyes on Bart Verbruggen and Illan Meslier among others.
Goalkeepers have let Amorim down
And as per Football Insider, so unhappy with the recruitment is the former Sporting Lisbon boss that he has asked INEOS to sack chief goalkeeping scout Tony Coton. Both keepers were recruited when Erik ten Hag was in charge.
“Man United are set to sack their chief goalkeeping scout Tony Coton, sources have told Football Insider.
“Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Ruben Amorim has not been impressed by either number one Andre Onana or his deputy Altar Bayindir since he took charge of the team.
“The new United boss has made that clear to the club’s hierarchy and they’re now set to take action on the situation by sacking Coton.
Goalkeeping scout to be sacked
“He’s next in the firing line as INEOS continues to make difficult decisions that they deem to be in United’s best interest.”
The new co-owners have been no stranger to staff getting sacked and Coton seems next in line. He has been a long-serving member of staff at Old Trafford and was the goalkeeping coach under Sir Alex Ferguson from 1997 to 2007.
After scouting stints at other clubs, he returned to United in 2020 as chief goalkeeping scout but his tenure could end if this report is to be trusted.
The Red Devils have conceded 24 goals in the league with the team languishing in 14th position with e negative three goal difference.
