It appears that new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim may decide to cut Antony loose after identifying a promising young winger to replace the struggling Brazilian.
Since arriving at the club in 2022, Antony has struggled to impress at Man United, gradually falling down the pecking order under former manager Erik ten Hag.
This season, Antony has made just five appearances in all competitions, starting just one match, namely United’s 7-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup. (Transfermarkt)
Given his lack of opportunities, it was reported that Antony would engage in discussions with the club over his lack of playing time.
However, there may be no need for such talks if a recent update is to be believed.
The Daily Star reported that United are open to letting Antony leave the club in January if any offers are received.
“Ten Hag questioned the £200,000-a-week star’s attitude in training, while United sources claim he has become a disruptive influence in and around the squad,” the article read.
In addition, Amorim is allegedly looking to Sporting’s Geovany Quenda as a replacement.
“United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to get Antony off the wage bill – and will sanction a move for Quenda next summer,” the report claimed.
As relayed by The Peoples Person, it appears that United are already plotting to secure Quenda’s signing at the end of the season.
Still, it appears that United may have other ways of offloading Antony should a deal for Quenda fail to be reached.
It was reported that United may swap Antony for Flamengo’s Lorran.
A loan-to-buy deal is also believed to be on the table, in which Antony could leave Old Trafford in January.
While United will surely struggle to recover their full £86 million investment on Antony, allowing the winger to leave the club may be their best option at this point, given his consistent underperformance and the need for a more reliable option with whom Amorim can build toward the future.
