Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has laid into his former side after a turgid 0-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.
There was hope ahead of the match that the Red Devils could respond from a poor draw against FC Twente to open their Europa League campaign, but these hopes were dashed after only four minutes when Brennan Johnson grabbed an opening goal for the visitors.
Things only got worse for the home side as they were cut open time and time again and lost their captain to a dubious red card just before half-time.
Despite a slightly more spirited effort in the second half, it was too little, too late as United conceded two more and in truth, it could have been a lot more.
Speaking to Premier League Productions after the game, Scholes ripped into Erik ten Hag as he commented on the United side, “they look uncoached, some of the positions they take, Ugarte, for example, must be difficult for a new player. He’s sometimes on the right or popping up on the left.”
The 49 year old was also unimpressed by the players’ effort levels when he claimed, the “players looked dead today, they looked flat. They don’t know what they want. It’s just madness the positions they sometimes take on the pitch. That’s where Man Utd are, and it’s difficult to watch.”
The pundit once again lamented how easy it is for opposition teams to come to the Theatre of Dreams and dictate the play, as United lost their second consecutive home league game by three goals to nil.
“Teams have come to Old Trafford and looked better coached and today was no different.”
Scholes’ comments are the latest in a cacophony of criticism of Ten Hag and his suitability to manage the side.
Robbie Savage claimed that Ten Hag’s job was very much in danger after their lifeless showing, while Gary Neville labelled the performance “one of the very worst” of the Dutchman’s era.
United do not have long to lick their wounds as they have two critical encounters away to FC Porto in the Europa League and Aston Villa in the Premier League before the next international break.
Whether Ten Hag will be in charge after those games is very much in doubt after the latest shambolic effort from his side.
