Manchester United have insisted they will not perform a U-turn on their decision to increase prices for disabled season ticket holders to park at Old Trafford.
The Manchester Evening News reports that two other Premier League clubs that had planned to do the same abandoned their plot after backlash from supporters, but United have decided to stick to their guns.
According to the newspaper, “United have increased the price of a blue badge for disabled season ticket holders by 20 per cent for this season, which means it is now around £330 for a season instead of £276.”
“United have said they have previously talked with disabled fans and campaign groups on the issue and they said they were content with being treated like other fan groups.”
“However, the club are looking into potential concessions for parking for parents with disabled children.”
It’s understood that United’s cross-town rivals, Manchester City, suggested a similar policy in which they introduced new charges per game weeks but announced a U-turn on their plans last week.
MEN note, “While City changed their policy on accessible matchday parking, United have clarified there will be no change in their position on the increase.”
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa also recently doubled their disabled parking cost but much like City, they scrapped the increment and apologised to their unhappy fans.
Steven Railston further explains that United have indicated that the club’s Disabled Football Association (MUDSA) have agreed to the price hike.
United have the oldest Disabled Football Association in the world (established in 1989) and enjoy a fantastic relationship – cultivated over many years – with the group.
The Red Devils currently allocate four separate stands to supporters with disabilities.
United return to action on Sunday when they travel to St Mary’s to meet newly-promoted Southampton.
