Manchester United appear to retain their faith in struggling midfielder Mason Mount despite Jamal Musiala emerging as a potential transfer target.
Last year, Man United were linked with Musiala following reports of the winger’s alleged dissatisfaction at Bayern Munich. His alleged frustration was believed to have formed after the dismissal of Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann, whom he supported.
While links between Musiala and United soon dried up, they emerged once again in April this year when it was reported that United had entered the race for Musiala, who was being priced at €120 million. Yet again, nothing came of such rumours.
Now, it appears as if anyone still holding out hope of a Musiala deal is set to be disappointed as the club looks to provide one of its struggling stars with an opportunity to make a name for himself at Old Trafford.
CaughtOffside reported this morning that United still have faith in midfielder Mason Mount and his ability to be a success at the club despite his slow start to life since joining in the summer of 2023.
“Manchester United reportedly believe that there is still hope for Mason Mount to turn things around and deliver for the club after the £55m they invested in him just over a year ago, even amid stories about Jamal Musiala being a possible transfer target,” the report read.
“Mount shone during his time at Chelsea, but it just hasn’t happened for him at United so far, with fans likely to be losing patience with the England international after his injury problems and lack of impact on the pitch. Still, it seems the feeling inside Old Trafford is that Mount can still come good for Erik ten Hag’s side, so it will be interesting to see what he can produce for the team in the season ahead.”
Still, the article was sure to mention that even if Mount does find his form, there’s a strong possibility that this would not be enough to convince admirers of Musiala to give up on their transfer hopes. “In fairness, even if Mount can get back to something like his best form, many fans will feel Musiala is the bigger natural talent with a higher ceiling anyway,” the article continued.
Mount’s debut season at Old Trafford was one to forget, given his repeated injury setbacks. In fact, he was restricted to just 20 appearances for United in all competitions last season, managing just one goal and one assist. (Transfermarkt)
Unfortunately, the start of this season was no different, with Mount being ruled out with a hamstring injury after just the second match of the current Premier League campaign.
Despite Mount’s difficult start to life at United, manager Erik ten Hag still appears to exhibit faith in the player, hoping that he will be an important player for the club over the long term.
“Erik ten Hag is really supporting Mason Mount. On a daily basis, Erik ten Hag is talking to the player is trusting the player; he wants to give him some time to come back in the best way possible, not to have any injury problems any more and to give him the opportunity to play on a regular basis, to be consistent and to be back at his level, at Mason Mount’s level,” Fabrizio Romano claimed.
While Mount may be included in Ten Hag’s plans at present, he will surely need to prove his worth quickly once he returns from injury if he hopes to secure a spot in the starting 11. With high-profile players, including Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, being recently dropped, it’s clear that no one is safe should their performances fail to live up to expectations.
