Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor.
Andre Onana has performed well this season but has faced criticism following his mistake-strewn displays in United’s recent matches against Viktoria Plzen and Nottingham Forest.
There have been rumours that Onana’s deputy, Altay Bayindir could be on his way out of the club in search of regular first-team football. If he leaves, the Turkey international will need to be replaced, to ensure United maintain sufficient depth in the goalkeeping department.
This is where Victor comes in.
According to Football Insider, United and Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are both interested in the Botafogo shot-stopper.
Victor has emerged on the radar of several top European clubs following his exceptional performances for Botafogo this season, where he played a pivotal role in their historic double triumph in the domestic league and the Copa Libertadores.
His heroics earned him the award of Best Goalkeeper in both the Copa Libertadores and Brasileiro. The 6ft 5in player has been dubbed the “best player in the country.”
Victor’s agent, Pedro Gutierrez, told Football Insider, “I have had many phone calls from clubs in Europe enquiring about John and that is no surprise after what he has achieved with Botafogo.”
“There has been interest from clubs in England, Germany, Portugal and elsewhere, but John would prefer to play in the best league in the world – the Premier League.”
It’s understood that the 28-year-old is eager to follow in the footsteps of fellow countrymen Ederson (Manchester City) and Alisson (Liverpool).
Gutierrez added, “John would like the opportunity to emulate those two and become the latest Brazilian goalkeeper to showcase his talents in the Premier League.”
It’s thought that a fee of £20 million might be enough to get a deal for Victor over the line.
