Outgoing Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly one of the names being considered by Manchester United as a replacement for Dan Ashworth.
Earlier today, it emerged that United have parted ways with Ashworth. It was stated that the separation was instigated by United, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe playing a pivotal role.
It’s understood that the decision to axe Ashworth – who joined United from Newcastle just five months ago – was made in a meeting after the Red Devils’ 3-2 loss against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
The next step for INEOS is to identify a replacement for Ashworth and according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Berta is on United’s list.
Di Marzio reveals, “The news is that among the names being considered as his possible successor is that of Andrea Berta, an Italian currently at Atletico Madrid.”
“His [Berta] is one of the profiles that the Red Devils board is evaluating, a possibility that could materialize in the next few months: in Andrea Berta’s future there is a possibility called Manchester United.”
Berta is set to leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the ongoing season, after a successful 11-year stay.
He joined the Spanish giants in May 2013 as a scout. He would go on to become their technical director before eventually being appointed a sporting director.
He has held the sporting director role since 2017.
Fichajes recently divulged that Berta is also on the radar of reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
It’s thought that his strained relations with some executives at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium are also partly responsible for his imminent departure.
Under Berta, Diego Simeone’s side have won two La Liga titles, a Spanish Super Cup, a Europa League and a UEFA Super Cup.
