Manchester United reportedly expressed interest in Tottenham Hotspur central defender Cristian Romero during the recently concluded summer transfer window.
United headed into the summer with plans to revamp their backline after conceding 58 Premier League goals and recording a negative goal difference at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
The Red Devils were linked with many high-profile centre-backs, including Jarrad Branthwaite and Jean-Clair Todibo, before bringing in Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to Old Trafford.
Now, Gastón Edul of TyC Sports has revealed Romero was also among the centre-backs United looked at this summer.
It is suggested United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain approached Tottenham “to sound out the situation” but the North London giants refused to enter talks for Romero.
Spurs did not put a price on the Argentina international, who has played a crucial role in La Albiceleste’s Copa America and World Cup triumphs.
Having moved to London from Bergamo in 2021, Romero has established himself as one of the first names on Ange Postecoglou’s team sheet. Accordingly, the club’s hierarchy informed his suitors that the player was not for sale.
However, the report adds Romero “clearly will leave” Tottenham to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world due to his “high value”.
As such, Spurs are expected to receive enquiries for their star centre-back next summer when he will have just two years left on his current deal.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are planning to add a defender to their ranks next summer.
As such, the 26-year-old could prove to be a smart option for Erik ten Hag, having already shown his credentials in different leagues and on the international stage.
The fact Romero regularly plays alongside United star Lisandro Martinez for Argentina further makes him an appealing target.
