Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has warned about the difficulty of doing deals during the January transfer window, insisting that the club must be wary of repeating the mistakes of previous years.
United have had a quiet month, both in terms of outgoings and arrivals. Apart from a few academy stars who have been gone out in search of first-team minutes, Antony is the only other high-profile player who has departed, following his loan move to Real Betis.
The Red Devils are yet to make a signing but that could change soon, with Patrick Dorgu expected to be officially added to the ranks imminently.
Ahead of United’s Europa League clash with FCSB on Thursday evening, Amorim spoke to reporters and pointed out the challenges that usually come about when trying to complete transactions in the midst of a season.
He said [via the club website], “This window is always really, really difficult and we don’t want to make the mistakes of the past.”
“We have to also understand the situation of the club. A lot of things are changing so we have to be careful in this type of window.”
“You guys know the situation of the club at the moment, so it’s nothing new.”
The 40-year-old emphasised that he is keen on working with the current crop of players available to him as United aim to finish the campaign strongly.
“Our focus is to work with the players that we have. I think it is clear we can improve as a team, all of us, if we have time to train and if we put some wins together. So, it will be so much easier.”
Amorim added, “We had so many games compared to training, that is how, for me, it is the biggest problem to start [my job] in the middle of a season, especially, in that moment, with a lot of games.”
FCSB vs. United kicks off at 20:00 GMT.
Victory for the 20-time English champions would secure them automatic progression to the Europa League’s last-16 stage, avoiding February’s two-legged knockout play-offs.
