Manchester United are currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League after seven games with only eight points to their name, which represents their worst start in the competition in 35 years.
After a hugely disappointing last season, it was felt that manager Erik ten Hag’s time at the club was coming to an end. But the FA Cup triumph meant INEOS were forced to keep the Dutchman at the helm.
He was still not out of the woods and needed to start with a bang in order to impress the new hierarchy who backed him considerably in the summer.
But results have been extremely poor with the Red Devils hardly managing to score while leaking quite a few at the back. They have netted only five times in the league while conceding eight, and have let in three or more goals thrice already this term.
EtH has really struggled
Despite all of this negativity, Ten Hag has survived thus far with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his entourage choosing to keep faith for now after a meeting during the international break.
He has reportedly been given the next two games to spark a turnaround or he could be sacked with the new co-owners looking at potential alternatives.
Thomas Tuchel has been one of the favourites to take over should the former Ajax coach depart but as per The Mirror, United could miss out on the successful German mastermind.
The English FA are trying to find the ideal successor for the post of national team manager after Gareth Southgate left the role following the Euro heartbreak and were in talks with the former Chelsea boss.
And after successful discussions between both parties, the FA have entered into advanced negotiations with Tuchel and a deal could be wrapped up very soon.
“Thomas Tuchel is in advanced talks about becoming the next England manager. Former Chelsea boss Tuchel was sounded out over the role as part of the Football Association’s search for a successor and is now in pole position.
United target Tuchel to be the next England manager?
“Tuchel is believed to be keen and talks have now accelerated quickly and, while a deal has not been formalised, firm negotiations are expected to take place.
“Tuchel has always been a leading candidate and there has been strong interest from Manchester United. But now it would appear things are moving quickly with Tuchel and the FA.”
Despite rumours of having a difficult attitude, it was Tuchel’s winning CV that drew INEOS to him. But it seems like they have missed out on the former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich coach.
While Ten Hag will be a relieved man, he needs to get a tune out of the squad and soon. The likes of Graham Potter, and Gareth Southgate are still looking for a job while assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is another potential option.
