Manchester United will have “a big chance” to sign Leon Goretzka if they make a move for him in January, as per reports in Germany.
United headed into the recently concluded summer transfer window with an aim to strengthen their midfield, which clearly lacked both technically secure and physically reliable options.
Despite being linked with a number of midfielders, the Red Devils could only manage to sign one senior midfielder, Manuel Ugarte. However, an interesting opportunity may arise in the winter window to hand Erik ten Hag another midfield star.
In June, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are eyeing a move for Goretzka. However, the German midfielder eventually decided to continue in Munich.
According to BILD journalist Christian Falk’s report for The Daily Briefing (via CaughtOffside), Bayern “wanted to sell” the 29-year-old but he said “no”.
Still, Goretzka’s situation at the Bundesliga giants “isn’t very good”, with Vincent Kompany only handing him a minute of league action so far this term.
Further, he only got nine minutes in Bayern’s Champions League outing against Dinamo Zagreb. Goretzka made the most of the opportunity and registered his name on the scoresheet in the side’s 9-2 win.
However, it is suggested that the lack of regular game time may lead to the dynamic midfielder changing his “mind again in the winter window.”
United and Bayern seemingly enjoy a good relationship, having agreed deals for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui this summer.
Falk pointed to the same before revealing United were interested in Goretzka previously. He added: “I am sure if they need someone in midfield in the winter window, and were to knock on Bayern’s door, there’s a big chance.”
Unless Bayern are willing to part ways with Goretzka for a significantly low fee, akin to Mazraoui – who cost around £15m – it is tough to see Dan Ashworth and company move for the Champions League winning star who will turn 30 less than a week after the upcoming winter window.
Under the new leadership, the Mancunian giants have largely focused on bringing in younger players to Carrington. Mazraoui, 26, was the oldest signing made during the summer window.
