Manchester United may soon have a golden opportunity to acquire German international Jonathan Tah.
The 28-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender is reportedly unwilling to renew his contract with the Bundesliga club.
Tah, who has fewer than 12 months left on his deal, could be open to signing a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs starting January 1.
According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany, Tah has definitively ruled out extending his contract, stating that renewal talks are “completely off the table.”
United, who reinforced their defence with summer signings Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, face uncertainty with several veteran defenders, including Johnny Evans, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof, whose contracts expire at the end of the season.
As a result, Tah’s potential availability will likely raise interest at Old Trafford, offering Erik ten Hag’s side an ideal opportunity to bolster their defensive lineup with a high-calibre, experienced player.
The Red Devils have been linked with the 28 year old, but a move has yet to materialise.
In 2020, Tah shared his aspirations for an English move, telling Spox, “The Premier League appeals to me… I always felt that the way I play would suit England well—the physicality and aerial battles are qualities that suit me.”
Having earned 32 caps for Germany, he remains a standout performer in the Bundesliga.
The 28 year old’s contributions were crucial to Leverkusen’s remarkable campaign last season.
He played 31 out of 34 matches and helped guide the team to a successful, undefeated finish under Xabi Alonso.
As Tah’s future edges toward a decision, Man United will closely watch the developments, eager to position themselves as frontrunners for his signature should he bring his talents to the Premier League.
