Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag appears to be edging ever closer to the exit door after Joel Glazer had a personal sit-down with fans of the club to discuss their concerns.
With Man United sitting in 14th position in the Premier League and failing to win either of their first two Europa League matches, patience with Ten Hag is running thin among the United fanbase.
Clearly, the situation has become so concerning that club co-owner Joel Glazer decided to have a face-to-face meeting with fans, the first time he has ever done so.
“I think you’re right, Laurie, about Joel Glazer,” Andy Mitten told Laurie Whitwell on the Talk of the Devils podcast. “That is the first time he has sat face-to-face with Manchester United fans because he called in on Zoom last time.”
“So that is significant, and what’s happening now, I mean, I feel like my anger came across in the podcast a week ago. I think I’ve gone through that stage now. I wouldn’t say that I’m resigned, but I didn’t expect United to win at Villa. But then the game starts, and you go on, go on, and it’s not a bad result, 0-0 against Aston Villa.”
“But, it’s under this huge cloud at the moment of a really poor start to the season, poor results, uncertainty around the manager,” Mitten continued before concluding: “The fans, I think there’s very, very little support for Erik ten Hag.”
Aside from fans, numerous United legends and renown football pundits have slammed Ten Hag for his inability to rectify the persisting issues faced by his team.
Paul Scholes complained that United appear to be “regressing” under Ten Hag before questioning the manager’s decision to omit Marcus Rashford from the Crystal Palace match despite his improvement in form.
Wes Brown took aim at Ten Hag’s squad selection as well, claiming that the United manager doesn’t know his best midfield combination.
Former Dutch international Ruud Gullit also weighed in, going so far as to say that “there is nothing recognisable” about Ten Hag’s playing style.
With Ten Hag’s days seemingly numbered if his support continues to disintegrate at its current rate, talk has increased about potential replacements for the current United boss.
Thomas Tuchel has emerged as a leading candidate, with reports claiming that the German is open to managing United.
With United’s leadership, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Dan Ashworth, holding a crucial meeting yesterday, United fans cannot help but wonder whether a decision on Ten Hag’s future has been reached.
Still, Joel Glazer’s meeting with fans indicates that the club’s leadership team is clearly aware of the fans’ dissatisfaction, begging the question of when and how they will react.
