John Amos, the beloved actor known for his role as the strong, no-nonsense father on the hit 1970s sitcom Good Times, has passed away at the age of 84. The news of his death was confirmed Tuesday by his publicist, Belinda Foster, to The Associated Press, though further details have yet to be released.
Amos first gained widespread recognition playing the WJM-TV sports anchor on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. His career in comedy began even earlier, with frequent appearances on The Tim Conway Comedy Hour in 1970. However, it was his role as James Evans Sr. in Good Times, which premiered in 1974, that cemented his status as a television icon.
In addition to his work in sitcoms, Amos earned acclaim for his portrayal of Kunta Kinte in the 1977 miniseries Roots, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination and further established his legacy in American television.
His son, K.C. Amos, shared a heartfelt statement with The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, saying, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
John Amos leaves behind a rich legacy of influential work and is fondly remembered by fans worldwide.
