Manchester United slipped down to 14th place in the Premier League table after their goalless draw against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The Red Devils only have eight points from seven games, which represents their worst start to the competition in 35 years. And as a result, Erik ten Hag’s position looks dicey at the moment.
The Dutchman’s stubborn tactics have failed to get the best out of his players while his talent identification has also come under the scanner. INEOS are set to discuss his future imminently.
The players also deserve their share of brickbats for letting another manager down and this is exactly why the club’s former chief scout Mick Brown feels potential replacements are wary of taking over the Old Trafford hotseat.
Incoming manager will be wary of United’s underperforming stars
United has proven to be too daunting a task for multiple big-name managers and the latest names to be linked with the job include Max Allegri and Thomas Tuchel.
And Brown feels both coaches will be apprehensive about the job owing to the players at the club. They will want to get rid of a few big-name stars who have underperformed under other managers.
“I’ve heard they would like a big-name manager to take over,” he told Football Insider. “But I’m not sure there’s a wide pot of options who would be interested in the job. It’s not as if there are three or four candidates who you could take.
“Allegri certainly has an impressive profile so he’s got that going for him. There are a load of players at United that somebody has got to come in and deal with.
New recruits will be eyed
“I’m not convinced that Allegri and other top managers like him and Thomas Tuchel would want that lot under them. There are just too many concerns there with the players.
“So coming in, they’re already governed by the transfer window, whether they can bring in their own players and whether they can make some changes.”
Anybody who comes in will look to bring in their desired recruits. But for that to happen, a lot will depend on where United finish at the end of the current season.
Another season outside of the Champions League places could prove to be quite challenging for INEOS to tackle and that is why a change in the dugout as early as possible is needed.
