Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United are aiming to sign a left-back for Ruben Amorim, either in January or the summer.
All season, United have been unable to field a natural left-back, amidst long-term injuries suffered by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
Shaw last played for the club in February while Malacia missed the entirety of last term with a serious issue that required at least two operations. While they’re both back in training, it’s believed United are still eager to reinforce that part of the pitch.
At the moment, the Red Devils continue to be linked with the likes of Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth).
Another player believed to be on the club’s radar is Alvaro Fernandez Carreras, who only departed Old Trafford just a few months ago.
It has been suggested that new head coach Ruben Amorim will not have a lot to spend in the next few transfer windows amidst the pressures brought about by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules but according to Romano, United are still on track to purchase a left-back.
The Italian journalist wrote on X, “Man United want to sign new left back for Amorim’s system in 2025, it’s already planned.”
“The club is already assessing options with more than 3 candidates in list. It only remains to be seen whether it’s gonna happen in January or summer window (most likely).”

Romano also spoke on his YouTube channel and gave an update on United’s pursuit of Davies, who is set to become a free agent in June.
“As I told you, there is still no agreement done with any club. Real Madrid remain there. But for Alphonso Davies, there are several possibilities. So let’s see what’s going to happen.”
“On Manchester United, a name I already told you last year, because Manchester United were monitoring this player, and keep monitoring this player. Now there is a new coach, and the new coach is Ruben Amorim. So let’s see what Amorim will decide to do for that position.”
Romano added, “But for Man United, first of all, in general, left-back is a priority position. So Man United want to cover that position. This summer, they decided to go with Noussair Mazraoui, this was the plan.”
“So last summer, last transfer window, because they believed that Mazraoui could cover the two positions, right and left-back. But in 2025, Man United want to sign an important left-back to also play in a different kind of position for Ruben Amorim. He wants a top left-footed player in that position.”
United are back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Portman Road to face Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.
