Manchester United’s new hierarchy refused to grant Erik ten Hag his wish to bring Sofyan Amrabat back to Old Trafford, as per reports.
In May of this year, Ten Hag tightened his grip at the helm by engineering a convincing win over Manchester City to lift the FA Cup — his second trophy in as many seasons as the United boss.
Just a few months later, the Dutch gaffer once again finds himself under heavy scrutiny after the Red Devils’ humbling 3-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool, as Arne Slot’s men outmuscled and outplayed the hosts’ midfield at Old Trafford.
In particular, Casemiro delivered a frustrating display, with his errors helping Liverpool get on the scoresheet not once, but twice. The Brazilian was eventually taken off at the break.
Against City at Wembley, it was United’s midfield that scripted the 2-1 win. However, instead of Casemiro, it was Amrabat who partnered Kobbie Mainoo in midfield and allowed him the freedom to consistently attack City’s penalty area.
Apart from Ten Hag’s own situation, that game also led to debate about Amrabat’s future at the club, with many fans expressing their desire to see him at United for another season.
It appears the Dutch coach also preferred to retain the services of his former FC Utrecht talent.
According to respected journalist Andy Mitten, the United gaffer wanted the 28-year-old, but his request was denied by other decision-makers.
Speaking on Talk of the Devils podcast, Mitten revealed: “Erik ten Hag wanted Amrabat for this season. And because of the chat within internally, that didn’t happen and that’s fine. This is how Manchester United are working now.”
Upon the expiration of the loan deal, Amrabat returned to his parent club Fiorentina before moving to Fenerbahçe late in the window. In Istanbul, he will get to play alongside ex-United star Fred in Jose Mourinho’s midfield.
Apart from not getting Amrabat, Ten Hag also saw Scott McTominay join Napoli against his wishes. In his press conference, the former Ajax coach revealed his preference was to keep the Scottish star.
Regardless, INEOS have backed their manager this summer, having handed him five major signings, including Manuel Ugarte to strengthen his midfield. Now the onus is on Ten Hag to bring out the best from his players.
