The agent of Manchester United flop Antony has stated there is truth to the news that Liverpool were interested in signing the Brazilian in 2022 to replace Mohamed Salah.
The 24 year old arrived to Old Trafford for an eye-watering £86 million from Ajax and became the club’s second most expensive signing after Paul Pogba.
It is safe to say that the Brazilian is certainly in the discussion for the most disappointing signing the team has ever made.
Despite the enormous transfer fee, he has only played 87 times for United, scoring 12 goals in total.
There have been numerous reports that the club are more than willing to facilitate an exit for the troubled winger but things could have been so different.
The Peoples Person relayed a report that claimed Jurgen Klopp was looking at Antony in 2022 as a replacement for Salah, as it seemed he might leave the Anfield side.
As it turns out, Salah never left and Antony was signed by his former manager at Ajax, Erik ten Hag in late August 2022.
Nonetheless, there does seem truth to the story as the player’s agent, Junior Pedroso, confirmed to winwin that “yes, this story has some basis in truth.”
“Salah renewed his contract at the time and that made Antony’s move to Liverpool impossible.”
Whilst Antony had just come off the back of a successful season at Ajax and was rated significantly higher than he is now, it would have still been a massive gamble for Liverpool to take.
Sadly for United fans, they are the side that did so and they have witnessed his value dwindle at an alarming rate over the last 24 months.
Antony seems to have lost his place for good at United as he has only played five matches all season, scoring a goal from the penalty spot against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.
With new head coach Ruben Amorim likely to deploy wing backs in a new 3-4-3 formation, Antony’s place in the future eleven or even squad looks rather bleak at the moment.
