Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has claimed that confidence is behind his increased form in nets this season.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper has enjoyed a much more stable start to the season than last, keeping three clean sheets in five Premier League appearances so far.
Onana had little to do against Crystal Palace on Saturday evening as United dominated but could not find a winner in a 0-0 stalemate.
Nonetheless, when he was called upon he was outstanding, making an incredible double save to deny Eddie Nketiah and then Ismaïla Sarr just a second or so later.
Speaking on more dropped points from his side Onana claimed (via the Manchester Evening News) “we are disappointed. We are such a big club and everywhere we go we have the ambition to win. I think we’re better than them, we had the best chances in the game and now we have to move on stay positive.”
Onana admitted that it was just one of those days where the ball seemed destined not to find the back of the net for his side but that they will hopefully be more productive in front of goal in upcoming fixtures.
Asked to comment on his wonderful double save he stated, “it’s confidence. You just believe in yourself and things will turn because I said this last year when I started here because I had a difficult start. Football is momentum.”
“I had difficulty in the first six months at the club and after I turned around my situation. So it’s just believing in yourself and following the flow now everything is going positive.”
The 28 year old has also been helped by a more stable back four of Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot playing in front of him after last season’s revolving door of defenders due to injury problems.
Speaking on De Ligt, with whom he was teammates at Ajax, he opined, “he’s a good player, a fantastic player, and I’m happy to play with him, although I’m happy to play with all of my guys.”
“We have a lot of players who are back. Victor [Lindelof] and Malacia are back, so now we are waiting for…. Luke [Shaw], also Harry [Maguire] who is an important player for us.”
Onana will hope to continue his fine form for United during a busy week of action as they take on FC Twente in their opening Europa League fixture this Wednesday night and then Tottenham Hotspur in a crucial top four battle this coming Sunday.
