Mariah Carey is setting the record straight on a video she recorded in celebration of Spotify Wrapped.
“Bad lighting and a red lip have you all thinking this is AI??” Carey, 55, wrote via X on Thursday, December 5. “There’s a reason I’m not a fan of either of those things! About to celebrate #Christmastime with my Boston #lambily!”
One fan was quick to defend the Grammy winner from any speculation surrounding the clip.
“I got your message on @Spotify and I knew it was you and loved the out of character red lipstick but knew it was for a festive occasion,” the user wrote via X. “Loved it and appreciate you and all you do for the lambily!”
Carey later replied with the two hearts emoji.
Every December, Spotify gives listeners a chance to look back at the artist and track connections they’ve made over the course of the year through their personalized Wrapped list.
As part of the tradition, Carey chose to record a video for her most loyal listeners.
“Hey, it’s Mariah. Thank you so much for listening to my music on Spotify,” she said in the video. “Your support through the years is the greatest gift I could ask for. This year, we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of my album Merry Christmas. I hope you enjoy listening to it and I can’t wait to share new music with you soon. Happy holidays!
Carey’s 1994 album Merry Christmas featured mostly covers of holiday classics including “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.” The body of work, however, also included original tracks including the smash hit single “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
The music is so beloved by fans that Carey is currently traveling across the country as part of a Christmas Time tour.
In a Christmas surprise, the “Obsessed” singer was previously asked what her favorite holiday song is. As it turns out, it’s not one of her own.
“My favorite all-time Christmas song is Nat King Cole’s version of ‘[The] Christmas Song’ — that’s my favorite,” Carey revealed on The Jennifer Hudson Show in November 2023 before sharing her favorite festive movies. “I love Elf. I gotta say that. And then I like Miracle on 34th Street, the original one. It’s an older one, but it’s got something about it.”
The holiday music and movies are often played as Carey whips up delicious treats in her kitchen before Santa’s arrival.
“I cook Italian food on the 23rd because my father had a recipe for linguine with white clam sauce that he left for me before he passed away,” she shared. “It’s very good. I make that and some other things.”
