Manchester United appear to be wasting no time in replacing Erik ten Hag, who they sacked as manager yesterday.
Widespread reports claim that Sporting’s Ruben Amorim has reached a verbal agreement to join United straight away, with his compensation to be negotiated with the Lisbon club.
Yesterday, confused reports claimed that his release clause was €10 million but that it might be doubled in the case of certain clubs, including United.
But in fact, Portuguese outlet A Bola today have explained the opposite should be the case.
A Bola claim that full payment of Amorim’s release clause will be necessary, of which there are three levels.
The first level is his release clause to join another Portuguese club, which is set at a prohibitive €30 million.
The second level is the buy out amount for foreign clubs, which is €20 million.
Finally, they state that there exists “an agreement between Amorim and the administration [of Sporting] for a departure for €10 million if an offer appears from a big club.”
Depending on what criteria was agreed for a “big club”, expressed in a TV news section from the same outlet as “European giants”, if it is anything other than league position, United would surely qualify as such.
It has already been reported that United will pay what is needed to land the 39 year old but paying €10 million (£8.3m) rather than €20 will be a big relief.
Meanwhile, Portugal is rocked by the news, with A Bola describing it as “so so difficult” to replace a coach with such “massive charisma”.
“An enormous gap” will be left at the league leaders, they report.
