Ruben Amorim’s response to interest from Manchester City has been revealed as Manchester United race to complete a deal for the Portuguese manager.
Yesterday, the media erupted as Man United officially announced that manager Erik ten Hag had left the club.
In his stead, Ruud van Nistelrooy has been named as the interim manager, while the search for a permanent replacement gets underway.
While numerous big names have been thrown around, Ruben Amorim was identified as a frontrunner for the role, with United reportedly approaching Amorim to become Ten Hag’s permanent replacement and the Sporting Lisbon manager verbally agreeing to a deal.
Although the club reportedly approached Marco Silva as well in case Amorim should decide against moving to Old Trafford, it now appears that the club has more certainty on whether or not the Portuguese manager will agree to a deal.
CaughtOffside reported today that Amorim has responded to Manchester City regarding their approach, which could have disrupted United’s pursuit.
“Ruben Amorim has thanked Manchester City for their interest but was ultimately not willing to wait to replace Pep Guardiola at a later date as he’s now set to make the move to Manchester United,” the report read.
“The Sporting Lisbon manager is close to finalising his move to take over as Man Utd manager, following yesterday’s sacking of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford after another poor result at the weekend,” the article stated before concluding: “Sources have now told CaughtOffside that an announcement looks to be imminent for Amorim to be named the new United manager, but there was interest from their arch-rivals City as well.”
According to the report, Amorim’s motivation for choosing United over City was due to his interest in securing a move straight away.
Should the report prove correct, United would be required to pay his €10m release clause to Sporting while giving Amorim a two-year contract with an option to extend by a year. This contract would see Amorim earn €8m per year.
As relayed by The Peoples Person, United are allegedly hoping to announce Amorim’s appointment before the Chelsea game on Sunday, meaning that time is of the essence in order to close the deal.
Ultimately, Amorim’s perceived interest in managing United is a welcome sight for United fans while also boosting hope for a deal to be reached in a timely manner.
