The execution of the 38 Dakota refers to Abraham Lincoln’s decision to hang 38 Indians who rebelled against federal authority in Minnesota in 1862 and massacred 490 Americans. It was the largest mass execution in American history, though Lincoln commuted the sentences of more than 200 other Indians.
The 38 have become martyrs worthy of commemoration in some leftist circles. Lincoln’s monument in Chicago was also just vandalized because of this incident.
