Christian Eriksen is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season.
United had quite a busy transfer window this summer, as INEOS showed openness to sell any player who was not a guaranteed starter under Erik ten Hag in order to strengthen their financial position.
As such, both young and senior stars, including Scott McTominay and Aaron Wan-Bissaka departed Old Trafford. Surprisingly, Eriksen, who lost his starting place to Kobbie Mainoo during the 2023/24 season was not part of the exodus.
The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United made the Denmark international available for around €5 million. A number of clubs, including Ajax, were linked with the player but eventually, nothing materialised.
To the surprise of many, the 32-year-old has enjoyed a prolific start to the campaign, having scored three goals and registered three assists in eight appearances across all competitions.
Amid Casemiro’s worrying form as well as Manuel Ugarte’s struggles to find his feet swiftly, Ten Hag has relied on Eriksen to play alongside Mainoo in the middle of the park. Regardless of this, it seems the Dane will not be handed a new contract at the club.
Eriksen, who is currently with Denmark for international duty, spoke to Bold/Ekstra Bladet and they report (via Sport Witness): “As he has stated to Bold, the parties are not talking about extending the collaboration further.”
Having entered the final year of his contract, Eriksen will be free to talk to clubs outside England starting from January.
Shining light on how he would pick his next destination, the midfielder said: “It will be a bit of a balancing act. I’m not getting any younger either, so those considerations are going to be part of an overall decision about where you stand in your career, where you’re going, where the national team is and all that sort of thing.”
Despite his encouraging performances, United have been easily outran and outmuscled in the midfield, highlighting the need for more fresh legs, who are also technically proficient in possession.
As such, it is best for both parties to go their separate ways in the summer of 2025.
Recently, Roy Keane slammed Eriksen, as the midfielder admitted United stars lacked desire following their 1-1 draw against FC Twente in the Europa League.
