Ruud Gullit expressed his dissatisfaction with Erik ten Hag after Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw with FC Twente.
It was a disappointing result for Man United, who not only dominated the opposition but had a lucrative opportunity to get their UEFA Europa League campaign off to a winning start at Old Trafford.
Despite clearly being the superior side, United failed to wrap up the match after taking a 1-0 lead into half-time. This draw also brought back memories of the side’s goalless draw against Crystal Palace on the weekend, another instance where United couldn’t clinch three points against weaker opposition.
For Gullit, United manager Erik ten Hag is to blame for his side’s underperformance.
“It’s that one goal comes from a scramble. But in terms of football… And I see this every week. It’s been like this for years,” Gullit stated on Ziggo Sport after the match.
“How long has this process been going on? There is still no recognizable playing style in terms of pressing and building up. It is hoping for an individual moment from a player so that they can create something,” the Netherlands legend continued.
“That is also the criticism of Ten Hag, that there is nothing recognisable. I feel sorry for him because I also want him to succeed. But he brings it on himself,” Gullit concluded, showing that he has clearly run out of patience for his Dutch compatriot.
Gullit’s comments are the latest in a mountain of recent criticism directed at Ten Hag amid his poor run of results.
Just two days ago, former United defender Wes Brown claimed that Ten Hag is unsure of who his best midfield combination is.
The press has also been giving the United manager a tough time, with Ten Hag hitting out at a reporter who questioned the effectiveness of his substitution choices following the disappointing goalless draw with Crystal Palace.
While INEOS had long shown no signs that Ten Hag’s job could be in danger despite mounting frustration from United fans, it appears as if patience may finally be running out.
As relayed by The Peoples Person, several senior figures at United are growing frustrated with Ten Hag, particularly given his team’s poor attacking performance.
United fans would be justified in wondering how much longer they would be expected to bear disappointing results under the current manager, especially since the same problems seem to have persisted throughout Ten Hag’s reign without any solution in sight.
