Manchester United’s draw against Crystal Palace meant they remained in the bottom half of the table after five games with only two wins to their name.
The Red Devils have improved in a number of aspects as compared to last season but it is ultimately results that will matter to INEOS and currently, things are not looking too rosy for Erik ten Hag.
The new co-owners took the decision to stick with the Dutchman after a thorough end-of-season review and after significant backing in the market, they would have expected a much better start to the new campaign.
With huge league games against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa coming up, the former Ajax coach’s situation remains dicey and he needs to spark a turnaround in form soon as rumours continue to swirl over his potential replacements.
EtH’s future remains up in the air
Max Allegri and Simone Inzaghi’s names have already cropped up and rather surprisingly, Football Insider have now claimed that the 20-time English league champions are keeping a close eye on Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.
There have been reports of a boardroom but-up at the Magpies and Howe’s future could be in danger after a public falling-out with sporting director Paul Mitchell.
If he does end up leaving, United could pounce with the hierarchy at the club impressed with Howe’s managerial ability and his Premier League experience.
“Man United are closely monitoring Eddie Howe’s ongoing situation at Newcastle after his boardroom bust-up, sources have told Football Insider.
“Ten Hag is still under the microscope at Old Trafford after a mixed start to the campaign, and his position will be scrutinised further if the team remains outside of the Premier League top four.
Howe one of the targets
“Howe is seen as someone who ticks a lot of boxes for Man United, with the hierarchy admiring the way he’s transformed Newcastle, his Premier League track record, and his media profile.”
He guided Bournemouth to the English top-flight, all the way up from League Two and kept them in the division for five years before taking over the reigns at Newcastle.
The team from St James’ Park qualified for the Champions League after a top-four finish in his first full season after over 20 years.
United are set to monitor proceedings at Newcastle and will assess Howe’s performance till he is at the club before taking a final decision regarding an approach.
