Noussair Mazraoui has disclosed a surprising reason that motivated his summer move from Bayern Munich to Manchester United.
Mazraoui was officially unveiled by United in August. It’s believed that United and Bayern reached an agreement at around the £12.8m mark, with a further £4.3m in potential add-ons.
The Moroccan has hit the ground running at Old Trafford, producing a string of sensational performances that have quickly endeared him to supporters.
He has especially impressed with his calm and composure on the ball, even when under immense pressure. Mazraoui also seems to have struck a deadly partnership on the right flank with Amad Diallo.
Ahead of United’s Europa League opener vs. Dutch outfit FC Twente on Wednesday, Mazraoui revealed why he decided to leave Bayern to join a club that was in so much turmoil, after an extremely disappointing 2023/24 season in which they finished eighth in the Premier League, and whose manager was in an uncertain situation.
The full-back told reporters that after some time in Bavaria, he felt he needed a change of scenery and when United expressed interest in him, he thought the 20-time English champions would be the right fit for him.
Mazraoui said, “Two seasons playing at Bayern, I needed another step, based on a lot of reasons.”
“I felt ok there but I had a feeling I could feel more comfortable somewhere else. Manchester United came in. I don’t think I have to explain why I go to such a club.”

The 26-year-old opened up on his relatively modest transfer fee.
He said about this, “It is not me who decides the fee so I can’t really say. That is the negotiations between Manchester United and Bayern.”
“It works good for me because I was not that expensive and I made a good start, so it is easy for the fans to say I am a good buy this summer.”

With Luke Shaw still out and Tyrell Malacia working on getting back up to match fitness, it’s almost guaranteed that Mazraoui will once again start in the right-back position vs. FC Twente, with Diogo Dalot being deployed at left-back.
Kick-off is on Wednesday at 20:00 BST.
