Despite creating a ton of chances, Manchester United failed to score against Crystal Palace and had to be content with only a point.
Erik ten Hag decided to bench an in-form Marcus Rashford, which created quite the furore post match, in favour of Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo.
The Argentine fluffed his lines from numerous presentable chances while the Ivorian was not his usual creative self with the manager bringing on the Mancunian in his stead in the second half.
Interestingly, sat on the bench remained Antony, who also got on the scoresheet during United’s 7-0 mauling of League One Barnsley in the Carabao Cup third round.
Antony remained on the bench
After a lot of talk regarding a potential exit in the summer, the Brazilian finally made his first start of the campaign in the cup and netted, not much more he can do.
However, given the calibre of United’s remaining options, it is quite clear that the former Ajax star is by far the weakest link.
His lack of physicality and pace was criticised last season and while he still retains his manager’s backing, the Brazil international does not look like he can cut it in the Premier League.
That sentiment was echoed by former England international Joe Cole who claimed that the winger’s skillset is more suited to the Eredivisie than the intense Premier League.
Not good enough for the Premier League
“The problem with Antony at Manchester United is I think he’s a player that is perfect for the Dutch league,” he was quoted as saying by The Mirror.
“I think the physicality of the Premier League is something he struggles with. He’s a talented footballer with great technique and skill, and it was good to see him playing well against Barnsley, but I don’t see him making an impact in the United starting team this season and I can’t see him turning it around at Manchester United.”
There were talks of a move to Turkiye but the club ended up blocking a loan exit while Newcastle are reportedly looking to pounce in January.
While the player has time and again reiterated his desire to fight for his place at Old Trafford, INEOS are keen to move him on and a big enough bid could see the club part ways with the 24-year-old, even if for a huge loss.
