Fabrizio Romano says manager Erik ten Hag is taking personal charge of Mason Mount’s recovery from injury and his full integration into the Manchester United squad.
Mount joined the club at the start of last season, but an injury-ravaged 12 months have seen the former Chelsea man see little action on the Old Trafford pitch.
According to Romano, getting the best out of Mount is a priority for Ten Hag and speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer guru said:
“In his last press conference, Erik ten Hag wanted to back Mason Mount.
“Erik ten Hag is really supporting Mason Mount. On a daily basis Erik ten Hag is talking to the player, is trusting the player, he wants to give him some time to come back in the best way possible, not to have any injury problems any more and to give him the opportunity to play on a regular basis, to be consistent and to be back at his level, at Mason Mount’s level.
Interesting words, even though it is easy to be distracted by Romano’s propensity to unnecessarily repeat Ten Hag and Mount’s full names several times in every sentence.
“So especially Erik ten Hag is still pushing to give Mason Mount chances, to trust Mason Mount for the long term and to have Mason Mount as an important player for Manchester United,” he continued.
“They were very happy at Manchester United with the way he was working even in pre-season to prepare for the new season in the best way possible, but then unlucky with injuries again, but Erik ten Hag is still there and the staff are working to get him in the best conditions possible, this is a very very clear mission.”
Mount could make the bench today but one big issue remains; with a fully fit squad, it is hard to see where the England star fits into a starting XI even if he is nursed back to top form.
With captain Bruno Fernandes almost undroppable in the number 10 role and the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo competing for the wing positions, Mount’s potential role in Ten Hag’s new-look side is unclear.
It is an interesting conundrum because a fully firing Mount is arguably too good to be a bench player.
Nonetheless, his obvious deployment would be as rotation with Fernandes and mostly as an attacking midfield supersub. He will be invaluable especially when Ten Hag wants to fire his high press into overdrive, as the 25 year old is probably the best exponent of that at the club.
