Former Manchester United boss David Moyes has been linked to a return to football management at Everton, another of his old sides.
The Scot took on the formidable challenge of replacing the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 but could not see out the season; he was sacked in April 2014.
Moyes has had greater success at other clubs. Between 2002 and 2013, he managed Everton for 11 years, taking them to the brink of qualification for the Champions League group stages.
The Glaswegian had more recent success at West Ham United, where he helped deliver the European Conference League trophy in 2023.
Nonetheless, after poor league returns, it was announced that he would not be offered a new deal, and he left the Hammers this summer.
His next managerial assignment may not be in the too-distant future, as The Metro claims: “As Everton’s dreadful start to the season continues, pressure mounts on manager Sean Dyche, and former boss David Moyes has been touted as his replacement.”
The Toffees have been in rancid form. They are rooted to the bottom of the fledgling Premier League table with four losses in four matches and were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on penalties earlier this week.
Dyche is now the manager most touted to lose their job, and “Moyes is a contender to replace Dyche if he does leave.”
Pundit and former West Ham United player Nigel Reo-Coker has already given his opinion.
Speaking to The BBC’s Premier League Review, he asserted, “I’m not putting words out there. I’m not putting it out there, but there is a certain David Moyes, who knows that club very well, inside out, who currently isn’t managing anyone.”
Whilst Moyes proved to be an unmitigated disaster at United, there is the school of thought that he cannot be judged in the same way as later managers as he was not afforded the same time or backed financially as the likes of Louis van Gaal Jose Mourinho or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
There is no doubt that while his style of football is far from universally popular at the clubs he manages, he has proven he can keep a team in the Premier League.
Everton fans would certainly snap the hands of anyone who can offer that this season.
