KYIV — Russian forces opened a heavy assault on Ukraine’s northeast Kharkiv area, prompting Kyiv to ship reinforcements on Friday to defend its border — and territory that had been occupied and liberated — at the same time as Kyiv’s troops are already outnumbered and shedding floor throughout different sections of the entrance line.
